AUSTEL SHARES LUMINOUS NEW SINGLE ‘THE BEACH IN DECEMBER’

Artist and producer Austel (Annie Rew Shaw) unveils her evocative new single The Beach in December, released ahead of her headline show at The Waiting Room on 4 December.

Accompanied by a nostalgic camcorder-shot video filmed with her brother Louie on Brighton beach, the track explores memory, place, and emotional reflection. “This song has a very specific sense of place for me, but it’s also about looking back. […] I wanted to create a memory for people to get lost in… it’s a bit of a time capsule.”

Cinematic and tender, the single examines how childhood shapes adult relationships. Written after a fleeting Brighton summer romance ended on bittersweet terms, the track was born from winter walks along the same shoreline. Austel recorded her full journey—from beach to train back to London—on a Zoom recorder.

The Beach in December marks a fresh chapter as Austel leans into the intimate, folk-driven textures of guitar-led songwriting, while retaining the spacious, meticulous production she’s known for. The track was mixed by Grace Banks (FKA Twigs, Jockstrap, Paloma Faith, Hozier) and mastered by Katie Tavini (Shura, Los Bitchos, Arlo Parks).
