MELANIE BAKER SHARES NEW SINGLE ‘REAL LIFE’ AHEAD OF DEBUT LP
Newcastle-based college rock newcomer Melanie Baker releases her latest single ‘Real Life’ today, the final preview of her forthcoming debut album Somebody Help Me, I’m Being Spontaneous!, due April 10.
A suspenseful alt-rock earworm, ‘Real Life’ pairs Baker’s signature attitude with a blend of chaotic joy and existential doubt, probing themes of control, identity and self-perception. The track questions whether we actively shape our lives or simply follow a prewritten script.
Following earlier singles ‘Sad Clown’, ‘Bored’ and ‘HAHA!’, the album was recorded in a feverish cabin in rural Wales and leans into absurdist humour and cartoon realism. Drawing on grunge, glam, riot grrrl and indie rock, the record is packed with riotous refrains, crunchy intros and towering bridges.
Speaking on the track, Baker said: “As a queer person, I’ve spent a lot of time imagining all the different life scenarios and possibilities of who I could be, who I should be, who I want to be and who I actually am. I’ve spent too much time pretending to be someone I’m not, playing out these different scenarios, playing pretend, trying to ‘fit in.’ The song is about the control, or lack of control, we have within our own lives and realities. Do we make our own choices or are they made for us?”
