MINOE CONFRONTS SELF-CRITICISM ON NEW SINGLE ‘SHELL’
Nova Scotia-born singer-songwriter MINOE returns with her poignant new single “Shell”, an intimate piano-led track that explores body image, self-criticism and the pressure placed on women to meet impossible standards.
Built around understated piano and MINOE’s emotive vocals, “Shell” gives voice to the harsh inner dialogue shaped by body dysmorphia, ageism and societal expectations. By externalising those thoughts, the track becomes both a deeply personal confession and an invitation for listeners to reflect on the way they speak to themselves.
Speaking about the song, MINOE says: “To me, this song is really just allowing my darkest inner dialogue to exist outside of myself. I hope getting these words out banishes them. I don’t agree with ageism or body shaming, so why do I do it to myself?”
She adds: “Shell expresses a lot of nasty things I’ve said to myself, but saying them out loud helped me realise I don’t actually feel that hateful toward myself. I hope listeners can use this song as a safe place to feel those emotions and, hopefully, move on after a good cry.”
Now based in Toronto via Montreal, MINOE began writing songs at just seven years old as a way to process a turbulent childhood and explore her queer identity. Her latest work reimagines that journey through the story of a mermaid escaping captivity off the coast of Nova Scotia to find freedom in Montreal’s nightlife.
Driven by a desire to create a welcoming community around her music, MINOE continues to transform deeply personal experiences into songs that resonate with honesty and empathy, with more new music set to follow later this year.
