SHORTSTRAW. SHARES NEW MIXTAPE ‘COINSTAR’
Coventry songwriter, rapper and artist shortstraw. has released her new mixtape coinstar via Our House Online, ahead of a headline show at The Social on 2 June.
Blending grime samples, donks, punk guitars and jungle breakbeats, the eight-track project captures the raw, high-energy sound that has made shortstraw. one of the UK’s most exciting emerging live acts. Led by Erin West, the project mixes tongue-in-cheek lyricism and 90s/00s nostalgia with themes of politics, rave culture and growing up queer in Coventry.
Focus single ‘come & go’ closes the mixtape with reverbed synths, jungle rhythms and bittersweet guitars, as Erin reflects on loss, frustration and uncertainty about the future. “The verses are personal , cutthroat and literal. I talk about Coventry, losing family members & friends to different circumstances like passing away & prison etc , people stuck in the past and the frustration of not being able to choose the cards we get dealt with in life and not knowing whether things are going right or wrong, I’m getting better or worse. ‘am i coming or going cos i can’t tell.’”
Having already supported Mannequin Pussy, SOFT PLAY and Fat Dog, alongside appearances at The Great Escape and Boomtown, shortstraw. continues to cement herself as a standout new voice in UK underground music.
