DEATH VALLEY GIRLS SHARE “MESSAGE FROM THE VENUS FLOWER”
Southern California rock mainstays Death Valley Girls will release their new album, Welcome to Earth, on October 9, 2026 via Suicide Squeeze Records. The announcement arrives with lead single “Message From the Venus Flower” and a video directed by punk icon Ian Svenonius.
The album was shaped by the Eaton Fire, which destroyed singer and songwriter Bonnie Bloomgarden’s Altadena home. Soon after, she lost Tommy, her beloved dog and closest companion. On “Message From the Venus Flower,” Bloomgarden channels that grief into an '80s-tinged, funk-driven meditation on love, loss and enduring connection.
“After the fire, Tommy, my best friend and dog, was not the same. She tried to tell me that her body didn’t matter, that our connection was eternal. I told her I didn’t care about our souls—I just wanted to know if her body was OK.”
Less than a year later, Tommy died. Bloomgarden says a chance encounter with a butterfly pea flower—also known as a Venus flower—helped her understand what Tommy had been trying to communicate: that love exists beyond physical form. “Everything I love is Tommy,” she says. “Love is more like a dimension.”
Across albums including Glow in the Dark, Darkness Rains, Under the Spell of Joy and Islands in the Sky, Death Valley Girls have used their space-rock sound as both celebration and spiritual search. Welcome to Earth is their most intimate record yet: less concerned with escape than with how to stay connected—and rebuild—after devastation.
