ANNA SMYRK SHARES POIGNANT NEW SINGLE ‘THIS IS A DRILL’
Naarm/Melbourne singer-songwriter Anna Smyrk returns with ‘This Is a Drill’, a powerful indie-folk slow-burner released alongside the announcement of her debut album Spectacular Denial, due 20 March via Community Music.
Written after the death of her father, the track channels the disorienting fog of early grief, shifting from a muted ache to a visceral emotional release. “It’s about not being ready to feel my feelings. Like life is happening on the other side of a heavy curtain — like each day is a drill for the real thing.”
Produced and mixed by Anna Laverty (Courtney Barnett, Nick Cave), the song captures the suspended, dreamlike space between shock and acceptance, its candid lyricism offering both confession and catharsis.
Recently road-tested on the Community Garden Tour, ‘This Is a Drill’ has already struck a chord with audiences. “People have shared their own losses after shows. For a song about denial, it seems to give people a sense of release, which I really love.”
